It is a ministry, first. Vulnerable children in the mountains of southern Haiti need more than a lesson plan. They need Christ, and education is simply how that Hope reaches them, one classroom at a time.

The Theology of Literacy

Literacy is the door to a personal encounter with Christ

Illiteracy creates dependence on others to interpret scripture. It leaves a person vulnerable to fear and to the fatalism of Vodou, unable to test what they are told against the word of God for themselves.

This is why the ministry began. Père Albert saw that the mountains of southern Haiti were home to people who could not read, and so could not read the Bible for themselves.

Vodou had its grip on the mountains not because the gospel was absent, but because the gospel had no way in. Literacy opened the door.

One School. One Church. One Community.

The school building is where children learn during the week and where the congregation worships on Sunday. It is where families shelter during hurricanes. The school and the church are not two separate things in these mountain communities. They are one anchor.

Hands and feet, not heroes

HEF does not go to rescue. It goes as servants, to walk alongside a people who are resilient, dignified, capable, and beloved by God.

HEF has never been a go-and-paint-the-church ministry. The Haitian men, women, and children in these mountain communities are not objects of charity. They are neighbors. They are friends. They are, in many cases, family.

HEF does not organize trips built around sightseeing. Every visit exists to serve the work already underway in these mountains.

Faithful presence means showing up year after year, not for a single trip and a story to tell back home.

Not the Leader

Haitians are fully capable of leading their own lives, their own schools, their own churches. HEF's role is to walk alongside, equip, and steward what's already God's work in these mountains.
